Solution – Windows 8.1 Black Screen Windows.UI.Immersive.dll

I just upgraded my system from Windows 8.0 Pro to Windows 8.1 Pro. All went fine, there was no loss of data. But I saw a strange issue. After the login screen everything went black. And there was an error messages which said:

CreateRect@Value@DirectUI@@SAPEAV12@HHHH@Z could not be located in the dynamic link library C:\Windows\System32\Windows.UI.Immersive.dll”

WindowsUiImmersivedllI did some search on inteet and after wasting 2-3 hours I finally solved it, below are the steps which I followed.

1. Boot in safe mode

There are several ways by which you can boot in safe mode, check on the inteet for various method. The one which I tried is as follows: When the black screen appeared I opened task manager by “CTRL+ALT+DELETE”, then in File->Run New Task type “msconfig.exe”. Go to “Boot” tab, select “Safe boot + Minimal” from “Boot options”. Now restart your system, it will boot in safe mode.

2. Open my computer

To open My computer you will have to open task manager, run new task, then type “cmd.exe”. Then in command prompt type the below command.

explorer.exe /e,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}

3. Go to C:\Windows\System32 folder

Delete the file: Windows.UI.Immersive.dll if its modification date is “October 2012”.

4. Go to C:\Windows\WinSxS folder

Here perform a search (including subfolders) for a file named: Windows.UI.Immersive.dll. Its date should be 2014. Copy this file and paste it to C:\Windows\System32 folder.

5. Go to C:\Windows Activation Technologies folder

This folder will be hidden, if you don’t find it then go to address bar of Window and type “C:\Windows Activation Technologies”. And then when you are inside this folder delete all the files and folders. If you get the message saying “Access denied” then go to security tab, give the “ALLOW” permission to the user from which you are logged in.

6. Reboot your system

That’s it, that’s what I did to solve the issue. After this is done, update your graphic card driver and you are good to go.
